Being a Vegan During the Holidays

Over the holidays, I thought I would have some difficulty and.....I was right. But not in the sense that I thought; meat was absolutely not a problem it all it is more so DAIRY and SUGAR!! If I can let those two monsters go, I will on it! Surprisingly, eventhough the meat smelled yummy, I was drawn more to the sweets of course and the cheese!

Yesterday we went to my Aunt's house for Christmas brunch: shrimp and grits, egg casserole, an array of meats, and some other stuff. The problem for me was the different types of cheese and crackers, and the desserts. I did eat some shrimp and grits(picked out the shrimp), but there was still cheese in it and I wasn't picking out the cheese so that's one thing down the drain. Then they had the NERVE to have katydids there. I LOVE sweets and cheese!! I lasted a while but you know how it is, when you sit longer you want something else to eat. Soooooo that meant crackers and cheese and you guessed it...a katydid.

You're going to think I'm crazy but the whole time I was eating my one katydid and a couple of pieces of cheese, I was thinking mmmm this is good but also: constipation, the sugar going into my bloodstream, OMG I'm eating dairy, I gotta do better. I know I know I'm hard on myself BUT I honestly feel and believe that in order for me to teach and help others, I have to be next level in what I'm doing. Yes I slip up, yes I treat myself, but at the same time I know what works for my body, and the things I should stay away from to keep my body running smoothly and the choices I made yesterday were NOT it.

So in conclusion, I will begin making more vegan desserts and find some alternative dairy options so I can enjoy myself and still stick to my lifestyle. I'm a work in progress so keep me in prayer!!

  1. Question: How do you stay from eating meats? to follow uo with that, does that include fish and chicken, or just all meat in general? I guess my over all question is, what does it mean to be a vegan?

  2. Thanks for your question Katrina. A vegan means staying away from all animal products: meat, dairy, eggs, etc. Some vegans even stay away from honey and clothing made from an animal. I hope this helps!

  3. Keesh, thanks for sharing you experience. So often people in the health and wellness field are labeled as "perfect eaters" and people think we make it look easy. Every day there is some sort of challenge and it takes a lot of prayer and discipline to live a healthy lifestyle. Holidays are always very challenging because we've lived every year eating the same food and only thinking of pleasing our taste buds instead of nourishing our bodies! I too struggle w dairy!!!! I love me some cheese but definitely learning to make better choices for my body, things that are delicious and nutritious:-)
